Electrifying our road freight network is an important step in meeting Australia's goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
NewVolt, founded in 2019 to decarbonise road freight and redefine Australia's logistics industry, plans to deliver the infrastructure needed to fast-track this transition.
NewVolt’s ambition is to have a 50% electric fleet on the road by 2040. To achieve this, the company plans to develop 60 electric truck charging stations by 2040. These stations will be located on major heavy vehicle routes in the eastern States between Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.
Access to NewVolt’s low-cost renewable energy will enhance freight efficiency and supply chain security, reduce reliance on imported diesel and save the freight industry billions annually.
“Australia needs to be fully charged and ready for electrified freight,” said Andy Evans, Chairman and Co-Founder of NewVolt. “The NewVolt Network is being developed to make this happen with 14 major charging hubs by 2025, and another 40 along key heavy transport routes by 2040”.
The NewVolt Network, comprising strategically located shared-use charging hubs along high-volume road freight corridors and major industrial precincts, will provide the enabling infrastructure to decarbonise trucking.
"The NewVolt Network is designed to provide Australia with a pathway to decarbonise road freight by delivering price-certain, reliable, renewable energy through a national network of shared charging infrastructure," Mr Evans added.
The NewVolt Network will be delivered in a staged approach to keep pace with advancements in electric truck technology, manufacturing and deployment in Australia.
Phase 1 is set to commence in 2025 with the opening of up to 14 major charging hubs strategically located in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and the electrification of the Sydney to Melbourne corridor along the Hume Highway.
“Electrification is coming, and shared-use charging is central to achieving the scale needed to support a connected network for heavy vehicles,” said Anthony Headlam, Co-Founder and CEO of NewVolt.
Phase 2 will further expand the Network with the launch of approximately 40 sites along key routes, including the Pacific, Newell, Sturt, and Western Highways. “Hub and spoke” locations will also be developed in significant industrial areas.
NewVolt is committed to early and ongoing engagement with the road transport industry to ensure the Network is rolled out in priority areas first and to set the stage for a sustainable freight ecosystem in Australia.
At a recent launch event in Melbourne, NewVolt outlined the wider benefits of zero emission heavy vehicles, including improved health and amenity in Australia’s urban environments, training and employment opportunities, and affirmation of the trucking industry’s role in a net zero Australian economy.
Henri Gouzerk, Managing Director of Green Tower, the European energy transition fund backing NewVolt, confirmed Green Tower’s support, stating, "NewVolt's vision for an electrified road freight sector in Australia is driven by a diverse team with expertise spanning transport, renewable energy, technology, and public policy. With the backing of Green Tower, NewVolt is ready to lead Australia towards a sustainable and electrified future for road freight."
